Sailing On the Right Tack

Ross sailors competed at The Waterfront Center in Oyster Bay, New York, on October 12 against nine other teams from around the area. After sailing 12 races, the regatta was cut short due to winds over 30 mph.

Senior Caitlin Cummings, freshman Isabelle Rowe, and East Hampton High School sophomore Jason Karlin placed sixth in A division. New to the varsity team, Ross freshmen Wyeth Moyer and Greg Gropper, and sophomore Elia Doyle had a strong second-place finish in B division.

These results are a dramatic improvement from their regatta at Port Jefferson on October 5. This is the first year sailing on the varsity team for all of the sailors but Caitlin, so their performance is particularly remarkable.

Ross sailors have also been sailing J70s in the Breakwater Yacht Club’s Wednesday night Performance Handicap Racing Fleet (PHRF) series. With three first places and one fifth this fall, Ross teams were the overall top finishers in Division 2. In the PHRF series, participants sail with one or two adults and learn every position from jib and spinnaker trimming and setting, to steering and tactics.

The team practices three days a week at Breakwater Yacht Club on 420s. Their last regatta for the year will be at The Waterfront Center at Oyster Bay on Saturday, October 25.
