Cross Country Gets Traction

With a whopping 24 runners participating this year—compared to last year’s two runners for the entire pre-season—the varsity cross country teams are excited to compete and driven to win. The boys and girls teams have 12 runners each and are captained, respectively, by sophomore Teague Costello and senior Lily Steele, who has been dubbed “The Real Deal Lily Steele” by her teammates.

On September 25, both teams defeated Pierson in their first win of the season. The girls won 26–29, with freshman Grace Gilbakian taking second with a time of 21:35, Lily taking third with a time of 23:25, and senior Jo Zhou taking fourth with a time of 23:29. The boys won 22–33, as Teague took second with a time of 18:30, junior Joe Ando-Hirsh took third with a time of 18:34, and junior Caleb Ryan took fourth with a time of 19:44.

In their first league meet of the season against Stony Brook on September 20, both teams lost, but individual runners enjoyed a strong start to the season. Four boys finished in the top seven, including Teague, who finished third with a time of 18:45, and Joe, who finished fourth with a time of 18:54. On the girls team, four runners finished in the top eight, including Grace, who finished third with a time of 21:22, and Lily, who came in fourth with a time of 22:34.

“Both teams this year are pulling together and motivated,” said Karin, adding, “I’m most excited that they’re all coming to Saturday practice!” The next meet will take place on October 9 against Port Jeff and Southold.

In other sports news, on September 29, the girls varsity tennis team beat William Floyd 5–2. Two days later, however, the Cosmos lost to the same team 5–2. William Floyd and Ross are currently tied for first place in the league.
