The fall athletic season is officially underway, and the girls varsity tennis team entered with a strong start, defeating Mercy 5–2 and East Hampton 4–3 last Friday and Saturday, respectively. The JV girls tennis team also enjoyed a win last week, beating Mercy 5–2. Both teams have upcoming matches against longtime rival Westhampton Beach on September 19. The varsity girls will play the Hurricanes at the Ross Tennis Center at 4:30pm. JV will play at Westhampton at 4pm.
Update: The varsity girls tennis team defeated Westhampton 5–2 on September 19, and followed that win with another victory against East Hampton, also 5–2, on September 22. The team is currently 4–0 in the league. “The girls tennis team seems to be getting better and better as the season progresses,” said coach Vinicius Carmo. “They are training very hard; they want to win the league championship this year.”
In other tennis news, freshman Trippie Tuff enjoyed a major victory recently as one of the youngest players in the 16-year-old category to win a USTA L1 tournament at the Ross School Tennis Center. In a competitive junior tournament, Trippie defeated the number 2 seed Jonathan Paris in the quarterfinals in two sets, 6–2, 7–5. In the semifinals, he beat Maxwell McDonald, the number 3 seed, 7–5, 6–1. In the finals, Trippie easily defeated Jacob Frisch 6–0, 6–4.
“This is a very important age in the development of a player, so we are looking forward to working during the winter in order to focus on possibly playing his first International Tennis Federation tournament by the end of the year,” said coach Igal Buberman, who will continue working with Trippie while he attends the Ross School Tennis Academy for the second year in a row.
